In June, 1904, Abbot Kinney, a wealthy tobacco mogul, realized his dream of building a renaissance resort and amusement park, culturally reminiscent of Venice, Italy, complete with 16 miles of canals, gondolas, amusement piers, hotels and Venetian-styled structures. Imported gondolas carted people around the town. Venice today is a cultural melting pot of art, music and its own lifestyle The canals are now a quaint upscale neighborhood in Venice. Fully restored, only six of the original canals remain today and beautifully remodeled homes make it a postcard scene along the historical shores.
